Halo 3 represents the third chapter in the Halo trilogy?an international award-winning action series that grew into a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 14.5 million units worldwide, logging more than 650 million hours of multiplayer action on Xbox Live, and spawning action figures, books, a graphic novel, apparel, an upcoming film adaptation, and more Product Details Brand: Microsoft Released on: 2007-09-25 Platform: Xbox 360 Editorial Reviews Amazon.co.uk Preview The Halo games were always the best reason to by an Xbox and now the final part in the initial trilogy of ground breaking first person shooters is set to raise the bar for all Xbox 360 games. Well known for their secrecy, Bungie have officially revealed little about Halo 3, but what is known is that the new game features an Earth completely overtaken and controlled by the Covenant, as they seek a secret hidden Forerunner weapon. Although little is known about the single player mode, more has been seen of the multiplayer, with various beta testing schemes going on in both secret and in public. A number of new weapons and vehicles have already been revealed including a new assault rifle, the new Spartan laser anti-vehicle weapon and a new hand held shield device for Master Chief that can create a far more effective protective shield around you. New vehicles include the ATV-like Mongoose, a new variant of the Warthog and the new, more powerful, Brute Ghost. Of course the most important new feature that every new fan is interested in is the graphics, and they are looking predictably fantastic. With lots of technobabble, new features like high dynamic range lightning and pre-computed radiance transfer means the game will not only play great but looks amazing too. HARRISON DENT Manufacturer's Description The Mission: The Covenant controls Earth. The Flood is unleashed and on the loose. With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, Master Chief is the only one who can save the human race. The entire epic story arc has led up to this moment. Master Chief, the last of his kind, is a warrior born for combat and bred for war â€" and is humanity’s only hope. After stowing away on a Forerunner spacecraft, Master Chief, a genetically altered, cybernetically enhanced Spartan supersoldier, must race back to Earth to stop the Covenant once and for all and save mankind. With his artificial intelligence companion Cortana in the grip of the Flood’s intelligent embodiment, Gravemind, Master Chief and his allies are vastly outnumbered, but the stakes are too high to do anything but face them head-on. In Halo 3, the third installment of the legendary epic, the war has come to a climax; the Flood continues to grow in numbers and strength, the armies of Earth are scattered and decimated, and the Covenant threatens to activate the Halo, effectively destroying all life in the galaxy. Master Chief’s mission is to stop the Covenant, destroy the impending Flood threat and, ultimately, save mankind. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Customer Reviews Halo 3 turned me into a born again gamer I skipped out the last generation of consoles for a few reasons: I discovered and explored the world of alcohol. An intoxicating RPG simply not matched on any console at the time. Friends owned the consoles so I played them occasionally anyway. Third, most important reason: Zelda on N64. The Water Temple. Yes, I did finish it. No, I didn't want to keep playing anymore. It killed all desire for video games. Now I find myself with a *little* disposable income which I have splurged on an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. And Halo 3 is the reason I haven't felt this pathetic an individual since Golden Eye. The campaign is too short, but unless you've spent hours playing 1 and 2, you are not going to complete it on Legendary on your own anytime soon. Unless you team up with friends and do online co-op, which is fun. The real meat is on matchmaking. I am horrendously obsessive compulsive when it comes to shooting things, but even some of my more casual gaming friends are hooked on this. Give it a while before you make up your mind, and if you really don't like it you can go outside and socialise. Lucky you. Many of the weapons in multiplayer are made obsolete by the spawn weapon, the Assault Rifle. It is more versatile than the Spiker or SMG for example and when combined with good grenade placement it is much more effective than dual wielding anything. You'll need to figure out where the power weapons spawn and then take part in the happy go lucky dance towards them at the beginning of every match. I can console myself quite well with the Battle Rifle, but you can enjoy the wonder of the close combat one hit kill gravity hammer, working your way up to the more satisfying one hit kill of the sniper rifle. There really is no answer to a head shot. Other than abuse, which you will find a fair bit of online. People tend to accuse the Americans of being the worst. That is wrong. There are simply more of them and so their mild mannered cursin' is more prevalent. By far the worst are the occasional English who view Halo 3 as a chance to seek restitution for not being able to get away with similar behaviour in public. A note about the melee system - if you don't know it's different from Halo 2, you won't miss the old system. If you loved the old system, you may have kittens about the new one. It places more emphasis at dominating at range before bopping someone at the head. So, if you think you have less health than your opponent, don't try and melee them if they arn't plant matter and can't press the B button within half a second of you pressing it too. Lag is an intermittent problem, but doesn't happen often enough to mar game play. Although I do tend to lose shotgun battles to Americans more than I think is reasonable. The replay feature is great, as is the ability to share your films on Xbox Live and watch others' efforts. 5 stars. Not perfect, but this rating system is limited and it isn't a 4. Unless you don't have Xbox Live. Then it's minus 1, making it 4 and you 1. Brilliant conclusion but a little short... As an big fan of the first two Halo games, I was really looking forward to playing the final chapter and last week I could resist no longer, investing in a 360 Elite and a copy of Halo 3. Playing this game is immense, the high def graphics are unreal and really put you in the game - it almost doesn't have the same feel as the last two games which at times felt a bit cartoon-ish. The sound is also fantastic, especially on the opening jungle level with all the background noises. The gameplay is as good as ever and the weapons feel more balanced that they did in the last game, so I found myself chopping and changing more than ever before and enjoyed using some of the new brute weapons and even the Spartan laser on the one level it was featured. I also enjoyed using the fixed weapons and picking them up to carry them around - a nice addition. Some of the new vehicles are excellent but I found myself frustrated with the new spartan chopper - it just didn't seem that quick and I found myself often staying a fair way away from the enemy solders/vehicles and just bombarding them from outside their weapons range, which isn't as much fun as getting in there with the banshee. The levels where you need to cripple the scarabs and board them are really good but I felt that using that twice in the game was a bit dull - figuring out how to get them down then getting on board half the fun but when you're just repeating yourself it isn't as exciting. The enemy AI was as good as ever but the ally AI could do with some improvement - I had a case where I had five guys sitting on the tank I was driving but no gunner for the spartan bike and whilst the warthog had a gunner, it had no driver! No matter what I did, I couldn't get the troops off the tank and into the other vehicles - so I ended up with one vehicle in the fight rather than three! My main gripe - and why this game doesn't get 5 stars - is the length. It took me about two nights of playing to complete it. This felt much quicker than the previous two games. Maybe it's because I can jump right into it being a veteran of several Legendary campaigns on the first two games, maybe if you were new to Halo and had to learn everything from scratch you could drag it out a bit longer, but to me it seemed to be over before it began, which is a real shame as I really enjoyed it whilst playing. Overall - the game looks, sound and plays fantastic and some of the new features are downright inspired. The multiplayer adds some longevity, but don't expect to be playing the single player for weeks. It's ok This game is hugly over-rated! The graphics are good but it's pretty much the same as the other two. But it is fun playing on 2-player. I'm not trying to put you off from buying this game but I am telling you that it is over-rated. If you like FPS, buy Timesplitters: Future Perfect, Die Hard Vendetta, Killzone and 007 Nightfire.
